North East Somerset is part of the European Parliament’s South West England Constituency.
UKIP gained the largest percentage share of the South West England Constituency vote at the EU Parliamentary elections in May 2014.
We currently have two elected MEPs in South West England, William Dartmouth and Julia Reid and we are a member of the Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy (EFDD) political group in the European Parliament
William originally worked as a chartered accountant. He sat as Conservative peer in the House of Lords until 1999, when the government removed most hereditary peers from Parliament. In January 2007, he left the Conservatives for UKIP, citing concerns about the policies of David Cameron (then Leader of the Opposition). William was elected UKIP MEP for the South West England region in 2009 and re-elected in 2014. He sits with the Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy group and on the Committee on International Trade.
Born to a Wiltshire family, Julia has lived in Wiltshire for 40 years. Educated at John Bentley School and the University of Bath, she graduated with a degree in biochemistry, later obtaining a PhD in pharmacology. She worked as a diabetes laboratory researcher at the Royal United Hospital, Bath until 2009. Julia is married with one son and two grandsons. Julia was amongst the very first members of UKIP joining as a student. She was elected onto Calne town council in 2013, elected as UKIP MEP for SW England in 2014 and will contest the seat of Chippenham in May 2015.
